Session 01 | Unjust Police Violence Against Black Men
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, pressed his knee to Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes. His murder has sparked outrage across our nation and his death highlights the broken system that has perpetuated racism against black men. As a church, we are called to stand against injustice and to fight for the rights of those who have been marginalized.
Our first step toward justice is to create a space for conversation, prayer and action. We gather so that we can see the problem as clearly as possible. We listen to stories and respond because addressing systemic inequality and injustice starts with us.
This past week, we introduced The Commons, a forum for pray and conversation dedicated to mercy and justice in our city. In Session 01, we focused on the topic of unjust police violence against black men. We mourned the loss of George and took time to hear stories of people in our community as they responded to the footage of his death.
As a next step, we have provided some resources for you to use as you respond. First, you can watch a recording of the session to listen to the experiences of our community. As well, you can access a library of resources that we have collected to help you learn more about the topic of police violence and ways to advocate for reform. Last, we have provided a safe space to ask questions.
