God @ Work | When Work Becomes Ultimate
Genesis 1:1-27 and Genesis 2:7,8,22 // Whatever work you’re engaged in – the pull to either find your worth in what you do or to look for ultimate fulfillment in your work can be so strong. We’re going to make stops along the highway of identity and idolatry as they relate to our work, but our destination this morning will be to marvel at the immense value God ascribes to each one of us and the satisfaction that is available to us in our Lord.
When issues of identity and value end up out of kilter we can labor under our work. We can forever end up in pursuit and not even know what we are chasing.Where is this a temptation for you?
Identity is a sense of self and a sense of worth. Is it hard for you to accept that you are of immense worth and that you received your worth, you did not achieve it?
The serpent’s lie is to tell humanity that they can find a better and fuller identity outside of God. Culture encourages us to look for our identity outside of God, and to look inside of ourselves or to others. How do you experience this?
How do you know if your identity is misplaced? Answer the following:
– Does success inflates you or does failure takes you out ?
– Does critique rattles you more than it should? Is your primary identity in your profession?
– Do you value others based on what they do?
Isaiah 26:7-9 – where your treasure is there your heart will be also. Idolatry is when something less becomes more important than God. Where do you tend to misplace your time, affection, trust, meaning, and hope?
Have you tied your worth to your performance or to someone's validation of you?
How do we pursue an unshakable identity?
How do you do the following:
– Ask him for help (what has the Spirit revealed?)
– Cling to contingency. We are contingent on God.
– Behold and marvel at your God.
